Population & aging

Total population, 1990–2100 (projected portion banded). Numbers on each line are median age at that decade; the line gets heavier where the dependency ratio is higher (more children + elderly per working-age adult).

The thermal future

Under the selected scenario. The line is mean temperature; the shaded envelope reaches up to the annual maximum. The stripe along the bottom encodes days per year above the 35°C heat-index "livability" threshold — brighter = more dangerous-heat days.

Inequality, standardized

Gini index (0–100). Higher = more unequal. Dashed = projected.

Unemployment

% of labour force. Lower is better. Dashed = projected.

Health: longevity & medical capacity

Life expectancy as the line; each decade node is a bubble sized by physicians per 1,000 people — so you see longevity rising and whether medical capacity keeps pace.

Democracy: thick vs thin

Solid = liberal democracy (elections + rights + checks); dotted = electoral democracy (clean elections alone). Liberal is the stricter measure, so it normally sits at or just below electoral. A red-shaded gap appears only where electoral runs well above liberal — elections without the rule-of-law and rights that make them meaningful. Thresholds: 0.7 strongly democratic, 0.2 authoritarian.

The civic fabric

All 0–1, V-Dem expert-coded. Direction differs by indicator — shown above each chart. Rule of law and free expression: higher is better. Corruption, polarization, and government disinformation: higher is worse. This is the "discourse health" layer — measured by country experts, not scraped from headlines.
